Your wide eyes look out further
\n<\/span><\/span>than our gaze can reach, far beyond
\n<\/span><\/span>earth’s bounds, our sun and moon,
\n<\/span><\/span>the limits of human understanding.
\n<\/span><\/span>What do you see as you hang there
\n<\/span><\/span>abandoned and stretched out in pain?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Around you, other faces, cross-
\n<\/span><\/span>eyed and confused are searching.
\n<\/span><\/span>Deprived of light and hope, they
\n<\/span><\/span>cannot pierce the darkness; each
\n<\/span><\/span>compelled to look, wanting
\n<\/span><\/span>to witness, but afraid to see. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Your gaze is fixed on God
\n<\/span><\/span>whose aching heart is full of love
\n<\/span><\/span>for frail humanity. We try to follow
\n<\/span><\/span>that pure gaze, but struggle through
\n<\/span><\/span>our tears, the mire of doubt, lack
\n<\/span><\/span>of faith, incomprehension.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We cannot, would not wish to join
\n<\/span><\/span>you in your suffering, but pray
\n<\/span><\/span>for strength to stay and watch,
\n<\/span><\/span>keeping our eyes steady so that we,
\n<\/span><\/span>held in your loving gaze, eventually
\n<\/span><\/span>may see through pain to glory.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
