Night was falling as we made
\n<\/span><\/span>our weary journey home.
\n<\/span><\/span>For some of us, darkness had
\n<\/span><\/span>already come, could sink no deeper, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

although the stranger who
\n<\/span><\/span>fell in step with us along the way
\n<\/span><\/span>had somehow shed a little light
\n<\/span><\/span>into our deeply distressed minds;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

and so of course we invited him,
\n<\/span><\/span>then when he seemed to hesitate,
\n<\/span><\/span>urged him to stay with us instead
\n<\/span><\/span>of travelling on alone into the dark.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I hastened to put a simple supper
\n<\/span><\/span>on the table, then joined my husband
\n<\/span><\/span>and our guest, hungry to receive
\n<\/span><\/span>more of his illuminating wisdom.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We watched, as hands
\n<\/span><\/span>took our daily bread, prayed
\n<\/span><\/span>over it, giving thanks, before
\n<\/span><\/span>he broke and shared it with us. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then he raised the cup (the one
\n<\/span><\/span>that had passed down through
\n<\/span><\/span>several generations of my family)
\n<\/span><\/span>and blessed the wine it held.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I remember the cup was filled right
\n<\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span> the brim, and as it caught
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>the last<\/span><\/span> rays of that sad day’s light,
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>it glimmered, so that both of us<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

gasped in recognition, rose
\n<\/span><\/span>to embrace our beloved friend,
\n<\/span><\/span>so recently lost, now found again
\n<\/span><\/span>\u2013 but he had gone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Never would bread and wine appear
\n<\/span><\/span>ordinary again, or Cleopas and I
\n<\/span><\/span>run seven miles at speed to share
\n<\/span><\/span>life-changing news<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

which <\/span><\/span>travelled<\/span> on ahead, far faster
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>than human legs could carry anyone,
\n<\/span><\/span>to meet us with astonishment and joy
\n<\/span><\/span>as we were entering Jerusalem.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
