At this stage, the idea is to open it up mainly for locals and hope that, if all goes well, there can be a further relaxation in early July. At least this level of loosening allows boats which are high and dry on Batson car park to be launched and put on moorings.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">One of the continuing difficulties is whether any public lavatories will be open. There are concerns about them becoming Covid-19 infected; concerns for the safety of staff who would have to clean them; and questions about how frequently they would need to be cleaned. The complication is, of course, the problem of, shall we say, water quality. Let\u2019s hope that a way can be found to do what is right.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">As I mentioned last month, the lockdown is devastating the Harbour\u2019s revenues. At the time of writing, the lost revenue amounts to around \u00a3400,000 which is a huge sum for a Harbour of this size. Because the law requires the Harbour to be run with a balanced budget \u2013 no profit, no loss \u2013 such end-of-year surpluses as may occur amount to little more than \u00a350,000. And, of course, the pain isn\u2019t over yet: the Harbour\u2019s main revenues are generated in July and August and there is no certainty that everything can become fully operational by then.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">It may be well-known by now that the <\/span><\/span><u><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/kingsbridgesalcombeferry.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Rivermaid <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">has been sold to Plymouth Boat Cruises and renamed the <em>Plymouth Princess<\/em> (there have been a number of those over the years) and will be cruising up and down the Tamar just as soon as the lockdown has abated. The ferry company which was operating her in Salcombe last year has acquired the 12.8 metre <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Lady Mary<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and work is actively going on in the Bag to prepare her for this season.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1555 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle.jpg 679w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-555x400.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/>Lady Mary<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> can carry 50 passengers, slightly fewer than the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Rivermaid<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. Before she entered Salcombe, she was known as the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/category\/Product-Service\/St-Mawes-Castle-Ferry-Company-553399714999462\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>MV St Mawes Castle<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and plied between St Mawes and Falmouth\u2019s Custom House Quay, with George Pill as its skipper. George was one of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwalllive.com\/news\/cornwall-news\/falmouth-boatman-george-pill-fears-1536075\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the last of the Pill family<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> to keep working as a ferryman. His grandfather, also <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somersetcountygazette.co.uk\/news\/7210249.waterfront-mourns-loss-of-ferry-boss-george-81\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">George<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, owned nearly all the ferries and pleasure boats in Falmouth at one stage but, when he retired, sold them off and broke up the business. It seems his family have had various <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/england\/cornwall\/8491153.stm\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ups and downs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> as well as being at loggerheads ever since, until Falmouth\u2019s Harbour M<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1556 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern.jpg 1211w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern-1024x891.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern-768x668.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern-800x696.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/files\/2020\/05\/St-Mawes-Castle-stern-460x400.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">aster finally <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwalllive.com\/news\/cornwall-news\/claim-banning-feuding-falmouth-boatmen-1638499\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">banned<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> them from operating. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Lady Mary<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> is an elegant boat and doubtless will become much loved in time: but, unlike the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Rivermaid<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which was built for the Harbour, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Lady Mary<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> cannot (at the moment at least) load or disembark passengers from the bows, which will complicate her use of Jubilee Pier.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Last month I mentioned the superyachts which have been returning to the UK as the result of the Corvid-19 pandemic as well as, of course, the desperate case of the local yachtsman marooned in Tahiti. There is now another, much more serious, difficulty for the yachting community. There are a number of European-registered live-aboard sailing yachts in the Caribbean which are <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/12\/long-journey-home-the-stranded-sailboats-in-a-race-to-beat-the-hurricanes\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">stranded at sea<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and having real difficulties getting supplies of food, water and fuel, because all the ports are closed to foreign vessels. But the hurricane season is approaching so it seems that they may have little option but to make a 4200-mile, non-stop, journey back across the Atlantic, some possibly single-handed.
