All of a sudden the Harbour has filled up, boats launched, moorings taken, beaches <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">buzzing<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and even the sunshine has returned (at least wh<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ile<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> I am writing this) and our solar panels are producing hot water. It <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">wa<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">s a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">speedy<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> transformation brought about by <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the coming together<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> of the pent-up energy of the boating community, some of whom would normally have <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">gone<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> abroad at this time of year, and the astonishing hard work and preparedness of the Harbour staff. This will ha<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ve<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> made a <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">big step<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> towards repairing the black hole in the Harbour\u2019s finances, but was not an ideal <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">way<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to launch <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/2019\/10\/01\/updating-harbour-dues\/\"> Harbour dues scheme based on engine size<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There are more <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">elements<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to complete the picture. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">land slip<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> at Ditch End which has <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">closed<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> the road to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lovingthebeach.co.uk\/east-portlemouth\/\">Venus Caf<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00e9,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> shut down <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Millbay car park and filled East Portlemouth with cars has yet to be rectified; but the completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gararock.com\/\">Gara Rock<\/a> is doing a thriving <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">trade<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. Moreover, South Pool\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.millbrookinn.co.uk\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Millbrook Inn<\/i><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is re-opening<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">H<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">owever, it is not plain sailing for small local businesses which have had no income <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">for months<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">have to decide<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> whether to take out a loan to <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">allow them to reopen<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Although<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> interest rates <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">might be<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> low, the gamb<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">le<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is on the weather. If <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">the summer is<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> fine, they may <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">earn enough<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to repay the loan; but if the weather collapses, they will be deeper in debt and<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> go under<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. One has only to look at the number of shop and restaurant closures across the UK to see the risk \u2013 and we are no<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">thing like<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> over Covid-19. That blessed day will dawn, not when a vaccine <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">becomes<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> available which <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">could<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> even be the end of this year, but when both a high percentage of the population ha<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> been successfully vaccinated and new cases (including British travellers) are not <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">import<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ing <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Covid-19<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> from other parts of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">w<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">orld. In a \u2018normal\u2019 year about 130 million passengers (around 350,000 a day) travel through Heathrow and Gatwick alone. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Finally, here is<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> something which does not seem to have been widely reported. In the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">middle of the acute Covid crisis, the two landing craft, LST-507 and LST-501, which left Slapton Sands on 27 April 1944 as part of <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/HistoryUK\/HistoryofBritain\/Exercise-Tiger\/\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>Exercise Tiger<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> only to be torpedoed in Lyme Bay with the loss of 749 US lives, have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/may\/01\/wrecks-of-us-vessels-from-d-day-rehearsal-given-protected-status\">given the protection of Scheduled Monument status<\/a>. Gradually we are coming to recognise the sacrifice of that awful disaster.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That was quick!
