May 2011\u2019s article<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">ventured that <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/2011\/05\/01\/the-answer-is-blowing-in-the-wind\/\">the aspect of climate change which may affect us first is simply that the weather becomes more turbulent and less benign, because of stronger winds and thicker cloud. There may be fewer days of gentle breezes\u201d<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. The following year the finding came through that, if the Greenland icecap were to melt completely,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/2012\/04\/08\/easter-2012-the-rising-waters\/\"> the sea level would rise by 7\u00a0metres<\/a>. I commented in June 2013 that in <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>\u201cwhat may well turn out to be the most cataclysmic event of our lifetimes\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the level of CO<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u2082<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> had passed 400 parts per million for the first time in 4.5 million years. Adapting the nursery rhyme I wrote <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/2013\/06\/01\/there-was-a-little-girl-and-she-had-a-little-curl\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>\u201cwhen it\u2019s hot, it will be very, very hot, and when it\u2019s cold, it will be horrid\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">, which pretty much epitomises this summer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">From then on every year has seen record temperatures. In February 2015 I noted that there had been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marriages.me.uk\/hugh\/2015\/02\/01\/hot-news-including-on-egremont-and-lidl\/\">38 successive years with above-average temperature<\/a>. The language then began mutating rapidly: \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>global warming<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201d(too cuddly, even welcome to some) gave way to \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>climate change<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201d (too neutral) which became \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>climate heating<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201d (not everyone\u2019s experience) which has now been replaced by \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>climate crisis<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">\u201d. Along with that came the recognition that the issue is not saving the planet, which will go on for ever: what is threatened is the future of human life on it \u2013 through extreme weather events, loss of habitat (as people in parts of California, Australia, Germany and Cumbria know only too well) and shortage of water and food, as swathes of the food-producing world dry up (the Mediterranean is on fire this summer).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">It is now <span lang=\"en-GB\">recognis<\/span>ed that extreme weather \u2013 like the scorching heat, torrential rains and 60mph winds we have had this year \u2013 <span lang=\"en-GB\">is<\/span> exacerbated by the climate crisis, and will get worse unless we stop the rot. We can\u2019t argue that we\u2019ve had <span lang=\"en-GB\">insufficient<\/span> warning; but we more or less know how long before everything becomes disastrous, and what we need to do to avert <span lang=\"en-GB\">this<\/span>. Th<span lang=\"en-GB\">at<\/span> is why COP26 is so crucial. A<span lang=\"en-GB\">s so often, probably the greatest difficulty will be<\/span> with human <span lang=\"en-GB\">psychology<\/span> \u2013 too much notice of impending disaster means that <span lang=\"en-GB\">action<\/span> is repeatedly put off; too little notice <span lang=\"en-GB\">generates<\/span> panic and <span lang=\"en-GB\">calamity<\/span>. <span lang=\"en-GB\">Is human behaviour going to be the real problem<\/span>?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow on 31 October and everyone agrees that this will have a make-or-break quality to it.
